Legal Revolution
14-15 May 2024

Calm Beach

Summer in the office is the best time to catch up on side projects & recharge the batteries.

It’s also the perfect opportunity to learn new skills.

Data literacy is widely acknolwedged to be a must-have for legal professionals

But it looks like a daunting task: highly complex, long learning paths, ...

We have designed a starter package for you:

in just 10 hours (5 workshops of 2 hours), you will learn and apply the knowledge that will save you hours or days when business restarts at the end of the summer!

Starting with a legal task

The most effective way to bring Data Literacy to lawyers is to quickly create something of value:

our workshops start with a business problem, end with a fully functional toolkit, and in between participants will learn a great deal of data science.

We will apply a simple yet highly effective process that you will reuse all the time:

-    Start with a business objective: a long and repetitive task
-    Write down in plain English all the tasks that you usually perform manually
-    Translate each of these steps into a machine readable language
-    Run them, and see how these few seconds compare to your usual hours-long manual tasks

What will we do?

Develop a toolkit to automatically create a bird-eye view of contracts
We will put this toolkit in production, to reuse it on any new document review project.

What will you learn?

  1. an open source data science language (it’s much easier than you may imagine)

  2. dealing with data formats, text data, data wrangling, plotting,

  3. exporting and communicating insights,

  4. core NLP concepts, regular expressions, tf-idf, part-of-speech tagging, named entity recognition, …

  5. Exploiting (the endless) freely available resources

DATA

We will work on frequent data formats that you often come across:

- Dataset of REULs (EU laws that the UK retained to ensure legislative continuity immediately after Brexit)

- Contracts: we will create a toolkit to automate bird-eye views of contracts, that you will be able to apply to any type of legal document
